Privacy Policy

OutLoud ("the App") is a voice reminder application developed by Gary Edgington. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App collects, how it is used, and your rights regarding that information.

1. Information We Collect

The App collects only the minimum information necessary to function:

Reminder text: The message you type or speak for each reminder. This text is stored locally on your device and sent to our backend server solely to generate the spoken audio for your reminder.
Voice audio (microphone): If you use the speech-to-text feature (Premium), your voice is processed entirely on-device by Android's built-in speech recognition. No audio is transmitted to our servers.
App preferences: Settings such as dark mode, speaking speed, and selected voice are stored locally on your device using Android's secure storage. They are never transmitted off your device.

2. How We Use Your Information

Reminder text is sent to our backend server for the sole purpose of generating AI-synthesized speech using Google's Gemini text-to-speech API. The generated audio is returned to your device and played locally. We do not store, log, or retain your reminder text or generated audio on our servers.

3. Third-Party Services

The App uses the following third-party services:

Google Gemini API – Used to synthesize spoken audio from your reminder text. Google's use of data submitted to the Gemini API is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
Railway – Our backend server is hosted on Railway. Railway does not have access to the content of your reminders. Railway's privacy policy is available at railway.app/legal/privacy.

4. Data Storage

All reminder data, settings, and preferences are stored locally on your device. We do not maintain any user accounts or user databases. If you uninstall the App, all locally stored data is permanently deleted.

5. Permissions

The App requests the following Android permissions:

RECORD_AUDIO – Required for the speech-to-text input feature (Premium). Audio is processed on-device only.
SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM / USE_EXACT_ALARM – Required to fire reminders at the exact time you set.
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED – Required to reschedule your reminders automatically after the device restarts.
FOREGROUND_SERVICE / WAKE_LOCK – Required to play reminder audio reliably while the screen is off or the phone is locked.
REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS – Required to ensure reminders fire on time on devices with aggressive battery management.

6. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes by updating the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
